Chatham Presbyterian Church Welcomes New Parish Associate
Dean of the Theological School at Drew University Also Joins Local Church Staff
The Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township (PCCT) announced that The Rev. Dr. Edwin Aponte, Dean of the Theological School at Drew University and professor of religion and culture, recently joined its staff as Parish Associate.

“We’re delighted to welcome Dr. Aponte to our church and community,” said Rev. Thomas A. Brown, pastor and head of staff at PCCT. “He comes to us with a deep passion for service, as well as a heart-felt desire to connect with our congregation and the community at large. His diverse and extensive background in ministry, higher education, and community engagement will be tremendous assets to us all.”

An ordained Presbyterian Minister, Dr. Aponte for nearly a decade played key roles in the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University, where he was both a tenured professor in Christianity and culture, and a director of advanced studies. Earlier he served as dean and chief executive administrator at Palmer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania, and dean of faculty at Christian Theological Seminary in Indiana, among other significant positions.

Dr. Aponte earned a BA from Gordon College, an MA in religion from Temple University, an MA in theological studies from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a PhD in religion, with an emphasis in religion and society, from Temple University. Also, he received an Honorary Doctor of Theology degree from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

Dr. Aponte has written several books on Latinx theologies, made numerous interreligious and ecclesial keynote presentations, and led a wide range of forums and initiatives focused on church and community life.

In his new role at PCCT, Dr. Aponte will assist with preaching and worship leadership, and provide support to the church’s mission and outreach and adult education committees.

He and his wife Laura live in Mendham.
